Welcome to the MAMAC blog!

Welcome, friends, to the official blog for the 2011 Fringe production
The Magical Marriage Computer and Other Plays !

"The Magical Marriage Computer and Other Plays" [henceforth "MAMAC" for short] is a smorgasbord of theatrical delights, a passel of thoughtful theatrical confections, a light and refreshing 75-minute entertainment consisting of a half-dozen unrelated short plays and other enjoyables. Six short stories, from serious character drama to sex comedy, featuring magical vegetables, Punch and Judy, awkward lap dances, cosmic cataclysms and breakfast with Johnny Depp. Plus, live music!

This production is presented as a part of the 2011 Capital Fringe Festival.
A program of the Washington, DC non-profit Capital Fringe.

The plays are written by DC playwright Brett Steven Abelman, who wrote last year's well-received The Water Plays. While the The Water Plays was a cohesive trilogy, MAMAC is more of a collection or a variety show, concerned generally with the nature of love and attraction.

Keep up with this blog for updates on the whens and wheres of the performance as well as insights into the process of putting together this Fringe production.

See the "Performance Schedule" post below for information on where and when to see MAMAC.

Hope to see you this summer!

Detailed Audition Information

Here is some detailed information on the March 10 & 12 auditions and the parts available.

We are happy to see anyone who comes to audition without an appointment, but you will have to wait until after actors with appointments have been seen.

THURSDAY AUDITIONS LOCATION
Thursday auditions take place in the Takoma Park DC Library at 416 Cedar Street NW, in the downstairs meeting room (enter through the main entrance). The library is two blocks from the Takoma Metro station on the Red Line. Limited street parking is available.

SATURDAY AUDITIONS LOCATION
Saturday auditions take place in the Cleveland Park DC Library at 3310 Connecticut Avenue NW, in the upstairs meeting room (enter through the main entrance, bear right and head back to the stairs). The library is one block from the Cleveland Park Metro station on the Red Line. Limited street parking is available.

INFORMATION ON THE SHOW

There will be six plays, with a total of eleven major roles between them. The role breakdown is as follows:

ANY GENDER
2 roles, 20s-40s
2 roles, 30s-50s

MALE
2 roles, late teens-30s
1 role, 20s-30s

FEMALE
3 roles, late teens-30s
1 role, 20s-40s

Some of these roles may be doubled in the final casting.

AUDITION

Your audition will consist of a short section of The Magical Marriage Computer which will you read with another auditionee.

You and your audition-partner will switch off reading BOTH Sam and Lindsey.

Sam and Lindsey are the two 20s-40s gender-neutral roles. If you are out of that age range, don't worry; we are just looking to see your abilities at this point. We will get specific to your age range at callbacks.

The lines spoken by the Computer will be read by us at auditions. (The Computer is not considered a major role.)

We are providing the script to those who scheduled a slot to give you a chance to be a little more prepared and show us your best.

Two last pieces of advice:
1) We are looking for acting which stays grounded despite the fancifulness of the story.
2) We are looking for actors who can make us believe Sam and Lindsey's relationship.

Auditions March 10 & 12

Announcing Auditions for Fringe Play

Brett Steven Abelman, writer of last year's 5-star Pick-of-the-Fringe The Water Plays (at dctheatrescene.com), is back with an evening of theatrical confections:

The Magical Marriage Computer and Other Plays.

A half-dozen short plays - all very different except that they are all about love & attraction, all a little unexpected, and all a little bittersweet - will be produced at the Capital Fringe Festival under the umbrella title "The Magical Marriage Computer and Other Plays."

We are seeking actors to play characters of ages between teens and 50s, any gender. In particular, we need an actor who can portray Johnny Depp circa 1993.

Actors will be paid a portion of any profits the production makes.

The Fringe festival occurs between July 7 and 24. Please be available during the entire Fringe period; performance dates will be determined in late April.

Auditions will be held at:

Takoma Park Library DC, downstairs meeting room
Thursday, March 10, 2011, from 6-9pm
and
Cleveland Park Library, upstairs meeting room
Saturday, March 12, 2011, from 10am-1pm.

Callbacks will take place at a location TBD within the two weeks following, depending on the availability of those called back.

Auditions are open, feel free to show up. Please bring a headshot and resume.
To guarantee and reserve a slot, please email tmmcaop@gmail.com with your time and date preferences.

Auditions will consist of a portion of the title play, The Magical Marriage Computer. If you reserve a slot, you will receive the script to peruse beforehand.

Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you!
